Initial customer demand for the new 15-inch MacBook Air has been "weaker than expected," according to a DigiTimes report citing sources within Apple's supply chain. The report claims that 15-inch MacBook Air shipment volume in July has been 50% less than originally estimated amid a broader downturn in the notebook market.
Because of the bad beginning, the report says that certain companies that supply Apple have asked for a decrease in the number of 15-inch MacBook Air computers being sent out.
The 15-inch MacBook Air was released last month at the WWDC event. It costs $1,299 and looks the same as the 13-inch model. It has a bigger screen and two additional speakers. The M2 chip in this model is also the same as the 13-inch model. This is the first time that Apple has made a 15-inch screen available for the MacBook Air. Before, the MacBook Air only came in 13-inch and 11-inch sizes, but they stopped making the 11-inch size.
It is not clear if Apple has sold as many 15-inch MacBook Air laptops as they had hoped. Apple will announce how much money it made in the third quarter on August 3. They might also say something about their laptops. Other new Mac computers that were released during the quarter were upgraded versions of the Mac Studio and Mac Pro models.
The report says that the companies that make MacBooks will soon be told about a new MacBook Pro, but it doesn't give any more information. The report said that Apple will likely launch a new MacBook Pro with a smaller 13-inch screen and a more advanced M3 chip later this year. The M3 chip is likely to be made using TSMC's 3nm process. This will make it faster and more energy-efficient than the M2 chip used in the current 13-inch MacBook Pro, which is based on a 5nm process.
